“Through vision a house is built, through education a house is stabilised”

We acknowledge the hapū of Ngāti Kahu, the guardians of this land and of the Wairoa River.

We are gathered here to affirm the connections and the ties that have bound us together since the beginning of this institution of learning, right up to this very day.

Here we stand, committed to the enduring principles and values that have shaped our thinking about education and its purpose.

BTI Karakia

He honore, he kororia ki te atua
He whakaaro pai ki ngā tangata katoa
Ānei mātou
Te Whare Tauira o Peterehema
āu pononga e karahuihui ana
I raro i ngā manaakitanga o tēnei whare/kaupapa/huihuinga

BTI Mural

Honor and glory to God
Peace be upon the face of the land
Blessings and good thoughts
to all people
Here we are
(Te Whare Tauira o Peterehema) – your servants in this ‘gathering’
Under the protection of this house, subject, meeting
Sending our words of
prayer and blessing
You are the beginning and the completion of all things
The giver of life,
of sacredness and of freedom
Therefore, provide us all with improved spirit, life, and clarity
Jesus Christ our Saviour
Amen

Gayle Te Kani
Teacher Education Head of School
Leader of Te Ropū Whakatere

Te Rōpū Whakatere is BTI’s cultural advisory group, made up of Māori staff and representatives from the local hapū, Ngāti Kahu.

The group provides advice to staff and leaders on Mātauranga Māori and Tikanga Māori matters, and supports effective communication and engagement with tangata whenua o Tauranga Moana.

Te Rōpū Whakatere also strengthens cultural competence, confidence and capability across BTI within a safe and sustainable environment, by fostering staff and student understanding and engagement of Te Ao Māori, including the ongoing learning and use of te reo Māori.

In addition, the group offers a culturally safe support space for Māori students.
