Honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi at BTI

At Bethlehem Tertiary Institute (BTI), we recognise Te Tiriti o Waitangi as the founding document of Aotearoa New Zealand and support the stance of the iwi of Tauranga Moana in celebrating and upholding its significance.

We believe that Te Tiriti was established with Christian intent—to forge a true partnership between Tāngata Whenua and Tāngata Tiriti. This partnership does not mean becoming one people, but rather two peoples in a covenant relationship, guided by respect, cooperation, and a shared commitment to values that honour God. Article Four of Te Tiriti affirms the inclusion of faith, reinforcing the foundation of this relationship.

As a tertiary institute located on the whenua of Ngāti Kahu, within the rohe of Ngāti Ranginui, BTI is committed to honouring Te Tiriti through authentic and meaningful relationships with Tāngata Whenua. This commitment is reflected in our approach to education, leadership, and service, as we continue to learn from and walk alongside Māori communities.

On Waitangi Day, we pause to reflect on this covenant and our role in upholding it with integrity, ensuring that Te Tiriti remains a living and active guide in our work at BTI.
