Celebrating Dr Alaster Gibson: 23 Years of Service at BTI

After more than two decades of dedicated service, Dr Alaster Gibson will retire from Bethlehem Tertiary Institute (BTI) at the end of 2024. As a senior educator and researcher, Alaster has been a key figure in BTI’s Teacher Education and Master of Professional Practice and Leadership programmes, shaping the next generation of educators and leaders in New Zealand and beyond.

A Career of Faithful Leadership

Alaster’s career reflects his passion for education, research, and servant leadership. His PhD research explored spirituality in Principal leadership, while his Master of Education Administration (Hons) focused on Principal leadership in teaching and learning. Throughout his time at BTI, Alaster has combined academic rigour with a heart for Christian education, mentoring students and staff alike.

“It’s been a privilege to teach and learn alongside so many dedicated people, from BTI colleagues and students to associate teachers and school leaders across New Zealand. The opportunity to integrate biblical truths into my work has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my career,” Alaster reflects.

A Lasting Contribution

Dr Gibson’s impact has extended beyond the classroom. He has supported teacher education internationally, including work on the Thai-Burmese border, and has contributed to BTI’s strong research culture as a thesis supervisor and Reasearch Ethics Committee member. His research on teacher leadership, compassion in education, and collaborative action research has been published in national and international journals, enriching the field of educational leadership.

A New Season

As Alaster enters retirement, he looks forward to new opportunities while cherishing his time at BTI. He shares, “Retirement is humbling and exciting. It’s a chance to reshape purpose and identity, but also to explore fresh activities and build new friendships.”

A Grateful Farewell

BTI acknowledges the profound impact Alaster has had over his 23 years of service. His wisdom, faith, and commitment have left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire. As BTI remains committed to Christ-centred teacher education and postgraduate leadership programmes, Alaster’s influence will be felt for years to come.
