Biography

Dr Nelly Choy has been working as lecturer and researcher with Manukau Institute of Technology, School of Health and Counselling. She is familiar with e-Learning pedagogies and technologies including the use of Canvas, SharePoint and MS Teams.

Nelly completed her doctoral degree last year at the University of Auckland, Social Work and Counselling Department. Her doctoral research involved using the Qualtrics Survey Site for a quantitative survey of 500 Asian young people, combined with the use of qualitative methods. She has also been involved in other research projects including the Asian stream, Longitudinal Study: Growing up in New Zealand.

She has 12 years’ experience in counselling within a wide range of agencies, such as: schools, a family centre, and youth Counselling services. For many years she has provided couple counselling and mediation services for the Family Court, Ministry of Justice.

In 1997, she completed a Bachelor in Theology. With her husband, she felt God’s call to serve with World Vision in Cambodia, where she taught at Phnom Penh Bible School and mentored young men and women. Furthermore, she has worked as a tutor within the Politics and Philosophy of Education courses at the University of Auckland. She enjoys interacting and supporting students in their learning and engaging them to think critically and to investigate for themselves the beliefs and values they want to develop.

She is a people person who likes to contribute to the well-being of others; she is energetic, pro-active, approachable and confident.
